Finger Lakes Getaway: Your 5-Day Itinerary if you love Adventure, Wellness and Wine
I recently came back from a 5-day Finger Lakes Getaway where I got to experience history, culture, nature, wellness and wineries. In this article I will share my 5-day itinerary which includes where to stay, what to do, the best finger lakes towns to explore, where to eat, and essentially: everything you need to know to have the best finger lakes getaway, solo or in a group.

Finger Lakes Getaway Day 1: Arrival & Reset
How to get to the Finger Lakes:
Getting to the Finger Lakes region is actually easier than I thought: If you are visiting from major cities like Toronto, New York City, and Boston you can drive there or get a bus/train. As someone visiting from Toronto, my commute was pretty straightforward: a 7-hour bus ride on Trailways, with stopovers in Niagara, Buffalo, Rochester and eventually, Syracuse. If you are flying in, you’ll arrive at the Syracuse Airport, and from there you can take an Uber to drive to Auburn, the capital city of the region and the best Finger Lakes town to kick off your finger lakes getaway.
3:00 PM – Check-In and Welcome at the Izzo’s White Barn Winery
Check-in at the Holiday Inn Auburn:
Stay at the Holiday Inn Auburn for a convenient and comfortable base in the heart of the Finger Lakes. With modern amenities, spacious rooms, and easy access to downtown Auburn and local attractions, it’s ideal for travelers who want a mix of relaxation and exploration. Plus, on-site dining and friendly service make it a hassle-free choice for families and solo adventurers alike.
Welcome Sips at Izzo’s White Barn Winery
Of course, the best welcome to wine country is… with a glass of wine: so as soon as you check in at your hotel, head over to Izzo’s White Barn Winery, a family owned and operated boutique farm winery and get a taste of their Rieslings, one of the wine types that Cayuga county is known for.
7:00PM – Dinner at Elderberry Pond
Your first taste of Cayuga County needs to be one for the books! I had dinner at Elderberry Pond which is a local favourite (I asked!). Set on a certified organic farm, they serve seasonal dishes made from freshly harvested produce and pasture-raised meats. The menu is rooted in sustainability, offering a true farm-to-table dining experience, which I love.

Day 2 of your Finger lakes Getaway: History, Heritage & Lakeside Luxury – Auburn and Aurora
For the second day of your Finger Lakes getaway, you will be exploring Auburn and Aurora, two of the best Finger Lakes towns you can explore if you love history and lake side luxury.
And just so you know… whenever I travel, I love organizing my itinerary into themes, and so I am grateful that this curated itinerary put together by the Black Travel Alliance and the Cayuga Tourism board did just that. It allowed me to experience different flavors of the region during this Finger Lakes getaway, without feeling like I am missing out on something. And as someone who loves to dive deeper into adventure and sustainability through community, culture and cuisine, it’s important for me to touch on all these points whenever I travel to a new destination. And if that is your travel style too (even just a little bit, keep reading!)
10:00 – 12:00 PM – Start your day with a History Tour of Harriet Tubman Home Property and National Historical Park
After breakfast at your hotel, take a guided history tour of Harriett Tubman’s home property. There, you will learn about the life and legacy of Harriet Tubman and the impact she had in the liberation of former slaves in the USA. The tour itself takes place at her former home, which is a historic site. Although most of the buildings have been renovated, the original architecture has been preserved, highlighting the historic grounds you walk on. Paul, the tour guide who leads this experience, provides such a great account of Harriett Tubman’s life before and after she moved to Auburn, and you simply can’t visit the Finger Lakes without learning about Harriett Tubman.
Travel Distance: a 5-mns drive (40 mns walk) from the hotel.
Next to her historic home (a 5 mns drive/30 mns walk), is the Harriet Tubman National Historical Park which now includes the restored Thompson Memorial AME Zion Church, where Tubman worshiped for over 20 years and where her funeral was held in 1913. Tubman herself helped raise funds to build the church, making it a powerful landmark of her faith and community leadership. The site is open to visitors on Fridays and Saturdays, and offers guided tours with Park Rangers (like Brittany Lane) who share Tubman’s extraordinary story of courage, freedom, and service, preserving her legacy as one of America’s greatest heroes.
12:00 – 1:00PM – Lunch at Mesa Grande Taqueria (Downtown Auburn)
Grab a bite at Grande Mesa Taqueria: burrito, tacos, or flavourful bowls are all at the rendez-vous. Grande Mesa Taqueria is a california style taqueria that brings an exotic flavour to Auburn. They also have vegan and gluten-free meal options, which is an added plus for those with dietary restrictions. Then, continue on the history trail with two museums that I think are just as important in the Finger Lakes region: The Howland Store Museum and the Seward House Museum.
Travel Distance: 3 mns drive, 20 mns walk from the Thompson Memorial Park – A.M.E.Zion Church.
1:30 – 2:30PM – Visit the Howland Stone Store Museum and Seward House Museum
Slocum Howland was a patriarch of the Quaker family in Sherwood, New York, who played a role in the 19th-century abolition and women’s rights movements. Specifically, for the former slaves escaping slavery who wanted to settle in either Canada or Cayuga County, he opened his store, tenant houses and a port on Cayuga Lake to provide safe passage, and this was a significant role in the Underground Railroad. Today, the Howland Stone Store Museum showcases his original 1837 cobblestone store, and has a lot of exhibits that show the role he and his family played in theUnderground Railroad and women’s suffrage. There, you can see abolitionist documents, suffrage memorabilia, and personal artifacts.
Next to it, you can also see the Opendore, former home which features letters, photographs, and historical collections that trace Emily Howland’s work in education and advocacy for women’s rights.
Pretty similar to the Howland Store House Museum, is the Seward House Museum. This is the former historic home of William H. Seward, who was Abraham Lincoln’s Secretary of State during the Civil War. The museum, built in 1816, still has most of its original furniture, artwork, and personal belongings, so when you walk through it feels like stepping back in time. William H. Seward was a key political leader: he helped guide the U.S. through the Civil War, shaped foreign policy, and is known for negotiating the purchase of Alaska in 1867 (often called “Seward’s Folly” at the time). With his family, they were strong supporters of the abolitionist movement, working against slavery and even helping people escape on the Underground Railroad.
Travel Distance: 20 mns drive from Downtown Auburn.
4:00 – 6:00 PM – Bianconi Boat Tours on Cayuga Lake
All this history would probably muster an appetite and a change of scenery. So, at this point of your Finger lakes getaway, head to another one of the best finger lakes towns to explore: Aurora. There, ease into the afternoon with a scenic boat tour on Cayuga Lake with a local tour operator: Bianconi Boat Tours. This is such a great way to experience Cayuga County from the water, while sipping local wines and soaking up vineyard-draped hillsides.
Once you’re done, get back on land for dinner in Aurora.
Travel Distance: 6 mns drive from the Howland Stone Store Museum and Seward House Museum.
6:30 – 8:00PM – Dinner at Fargo Grill
Unwind at Fargo Bar & Grill in Aurora. Think hearty burgers, craft beer, and seasonal salads in a cozy, small-town setting.
Travel Distance: 5 mns walk from the boat dock.
8:00 – 9:30PM – S’mores & Small City Vibes at Inns of Aurora
End the night walking nature trails around Inns of Aurora, up to the look out point where you can watch the sunset, roast some marshmallows and enjoy gooey campfire s’mores under the stars: a magical night experience to end the second day of your Finger Lakes getaway.
Travel Distance: 5 mns walk from Fargo Grill.

Day 3 of your Finger Lakes Getaway: Nature, Wine & Lakeside Fun in Fair Haven, NY
For this day, we are exploring Fair Haven, another one of the best towns to see in the Finger Lakes. But first… as yesterday was pretty packed, start with a slow morning at your hotel. The Holiday Inn Auburn has an indoor pool and gym, if you want to get your body moving before you kick off the day. Then, head out for brunch at Hardware Cafe & General Store.
Travel Distance: 25-30 mns drive from Holiday Inn Aurora.
11:30 – 12:30 PM – Brunch at Hardware Café & General Store
The Hardware Café & General Store in Fair Haven offers a cozy mix of homestyle meals, gourmet coffee, and locally made products, all inside a historic downtown building near Lake Ontario. Along with full breakfast and lunch, the café serves specialty drinks, ice cream, and has vegan and gluten-free options. There, you can shop for some local products to take home with you: local honey, maple syrup, crafts, books, and antiques. Once you’re done with your meal, head over to the Sterling Nature Center.
Travel Distance: 9 mns drive from Hardware Cafe & General Store.
1:00 – 2:30 PM – Walk around the Sterling Nature Center and the Fair Haven Beach State Park
This spot is a great stop for nature lovers and hiking enthusiasts. Set along the Lake Ontario shoreline, Fair Haven Beach State Park offers over 2,000 acres of trails, wetlands, woodlands, and waterfront views. Start your visit at the Sterling Nature Center (right on site), where you can pick up a map of the entire area and decide on the trail you would want to hike based on your energy level and the time you want to allocate to this activity. We picked a lighter one for this trip, but if you want to spend more time there, you absolutely can. Our trail (about 10-15 mins walk through the woods) led to a beautiful sandy beach where we could see people having family picnics, swimming, and even painting. Other trails allow for birding and would be perfect for spotting herons, ospreys, and other wildlife. It’s really up to your personal interest, whether you are a hiker, birder, or just want to spend some easy, relaxing time with your family on the beach, immersed in the natural beauty of Lake Ontario.
Then, head over to Colloca Estate Winery for waterbiking and wine tasting.
Travel Distance: 15 mns drive from Sterling Nature Center.
3:00 – 4:00PM – Go Waterbiking on Little Sodus Bay
Glide across Little Sodus Bay on hydrobikes: this was my very first waterbiking experience, and I would definitely recommend it! At sea, you can enjoy the fresh air, amazing fun, and unbeatable water views. Launched right from the docks of Colloca Estate Winery, these human-powered water bikes are surprisingly stable, easy to ride, and perfect for all ages and skill levels. I liked the fact this experience is powered by local teen entrepreneur Madison Leszczynski, and taking part also means supporting a local business. It felt like the perfect way to slow down, soak up the beauty of the shoreline, and Fair Haven from an entirely new perspective.. before leaning into the afternoon wine tasting experience that would follow.
4:00 – 6:30PM – Indulge in Wine Tasting & Dinner at Colloca Estate Winery
There is no shortage of time when it comes to wine tasting, so if you want to stay and linger a bit longer, then you totally can! After the waterbiking experience, you would want to unwind, relax and sip some good, locally grown wine. And thankfully, you are already at the right place, at the right time: in the northernmost winery of the Finger Lakes region! Right on property, you can sip the Colloca estate-grown wines, walk around the vineyard, and indulge in Sicilian-inspired fare at the Trattoria Bistro while dancing to the serenade of a live band. (Of course, drink responsibly).
When done, head back to your homebase, the Holiday Inn Auburn, for a relaxing night. And if you are not up for driving, you can call a taxi.
Travel Distance: 45 mns drive back to Holiday Inn Auburn.

Day 4 of your Finger Lakes Getaway: Outdoors in The Finger Lakes
Today the itinerary will take you a bit around the region, across some of the remaining beautiful towns in Finger Lakes that are worth exploring – or at least stopping by. As this day will include more outdoor experiences, make sure you pack for the outdoors! Get an early start on the road, and kick off the day with a loaded breakfast at Dugan Country Grill.
Travel Distance: 20 mns drive from Holiday Inn Auburn
9:30AM – Breakfast at Dugan’s Country Grill (Aurora, NY)
Tucked away in Aurora, Dugan’s Country Grill is the kind of diner that keeps locals coming back and makes visitors feel instantly at home. Known for its hearty country breakfasts, generous portions, and no-frills comfort food, it’s the perfect spot to start your day before exploring the hike to come. Beyond the menu, what really sets Dugan’s apart is the warm hospitality: Dugan himself comes to greet his guests every day that he is in house, ensuring that everyone really feels like home and gets a “taste of home” through his food!
After your meal, head over to the Fillmore Glen State Park for a scenic hike.
Travel Distance: 20 mns drive from Dugan Country Grill
11:00 – 1:30PM – Hike at Fillmore Glen State Park (Moravia, NY)
Fillmore Glen State Park combines natural beauty with a touch of history, offering forested trails, dramatic gorges, and five waterfalls alongside a connection to America’s 13th president, Millard Fillmore, who was born nearby. The park honors his legacy while giving visitors a chance to explore some of the Finger Lakes region’s most scenic landscapes. With its mix of rugged trails, shaded woodlands, and historic significance, it’s a great stop for nature lovers and history enthusiasts, which is why I would recommend it on your Finger Lakes getaway. You can choose from several routes ranging from easy walks to moderate hikes, with trails typically taking 30 minutes to 2 hours depending on the path.
Once done, headover to Summerhill Brewing for a refreshing pint of local beer or cider, and some freshly made pizzas!
Travel Distance: 11 mns drive from Holiday Inn Auburn
2:00 – 3:00 PM – Lunch at Summerhill Brewing Co. (Summerhill, NY)
Set against rolling fields and wide-open skies, this family-run farm brewery offers more than just craft beer: it’s an experience that adds something quite unique to your Finger Lakes getaway. There, you can sip small-batch ales brewed on-site while taking in sweeping countryside views that make the perfect backdrop for a laid-back afternoon. I absolutely loved this stop and did not want to leave. The food menu is just as memorable, featuring wood-fired pizzas with farm-fresh toppings, flavorful tacos, and seasonal bites that pair beautifully with the brews. What makes this spot unique is its rustic charm and culinary creativity, making it a welcoming stop for families, friends, and travelers looking to slow down, savor local flavors, and soak in the scenery.’
The day continues with another laid-back and relaxing experience: horseback riding at the Southern Tiers Stables.
Travel Distance: 15 mns drive from Summerhill Brewing Co.

Located in the rolling hills of the Southern Tier, Southern Tier Stables offers horseback riding experiences that mix adventure with breathtaking scenery. Riders of all skill levels can enjoy guided trail rides through lush forests, open fields, and along quiet streams, taking in the natural beauty of the region from horseback. The stables pride themselves on well-trained, friendly horses and attentive instructors, making it accessible for beginners while still engaging for experienced riders. Whether you’re seeking a peaceful escape or an active outdoor adventure, Southern Tier Stables provides a unique way to connect with nature and enjoy the charm of upstate New York from a whole new perspective. They also have airbnb cabins, where you can spend the night and have a complete southern experience.
Then, head back to Auburn for dinner and to unwind at the Lavish Lounge.
Travel Distance: 30 mns drive from Southern tier stables
7:30PM – Dinner at Lavish Lounge
Lavish Lounge offers a vibrant fusion of authentic Jamaican and American cuisine in a stylish, contemporary setting. This is where you can get a taste of Caribbean cuisine in Auburn! With staple dishes like jerk chicken, oxtail stew, and jerk mac & cheese, complemented by a selection of beverages and light bites. The venue also features live entertainment, including DJ sets and themed nights, so you could get a great surprise depending on when you are having your Finger Lakes getaway!
Once you are done with dinner, head back to your homebase hotel to wrap up the night.
Travel Distance: 4 mns drive to Holiday Inn Auburn.

Day 5 of your Finger Lakes Getaway: Heritage & Farewell
For the last day of your Finger Lakes getaway, explore a bit of Auburn before heading back home, and kick off the day at one of the best breakfast restaurants in town.
Travel Distance: 6 mns drive (48 mns walk) from Holiday Inn Auburn.
8:30 – 9:30 AM – Breakfast at ‘At Long Last’ Restaurant
Start your final morning at this award-winning diner, celebrated for its family-friendly charm and standout menu. Then, take a quick tour of the Equal Rights Heritage Center.
Travel Distance: 5 mns drive (45 mns walk) from the ‘At Long Last’ Restaurant
9:45 – 10:45 AM – Tour of the Equal Rights Heritage Center
The Equal Rights Heritage Center is a pivotal destination for those interested in the history of abolitionism and women’s suffrage.I liked this stop because if you are not familiar with the abolitionist history of the region, it really provides a comprehensive look into New York’s progressive history with key figures and timelines. The exhibit highlights the state’s role in advancing equality, featuring stories of key figures and movements from the 1800s to the present. A standout feature of the center is the Harriet Tubman Commemorative Statue (and you can’t end your Finger Lakes getaway without taking a photo with this statue); a 7.5-foot bronze sculpture by artist Brian Hanlon. The statue is in the center’s courtyard and represents a young version of Harriet leading others to freedom (though the lamp is symbolic), embodying her bravery and leadership. This statue serves as a powerful symbol of her legacy and the ongoing fight for justice.
And if you have a bit more time before you wrap up your Finger Lakes getaway, you can walk on the Harriet Tubman Lantern Trail, an immersive outdoor experience that guides guests through Auburn’s historical sites connected to Tubman’s life and work. By scanning QR codes at marked locations, you can learn about the city’s rich abolitionist history.
After this, head over to Prison City Brewing for Lunch after your final stop.
Travel Distance: 2 mns drive (6 mns walk) from the Equal Rights Heritage Center
11:00 – 12:00PM – Lunch at Prison City Brewing
Nicknamed “Prison City”, Prison City Brewing is a beloved local brewery offering house-brewed beers from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts. Its taproom is welcoming for locals and visitors alike, while the Prison City Pub & Speakeasy pairs craft beer with elevated pub fare in a cozy, speakeasy-style setting. The brewery also hosts community events and offers nearby loft accommodations for travelers. With its mix of craft brews, good food, and local history, it’s a must-visit stop in Auburn.
And in the spirit of ending your Finger Lakes getaway on a reflective note, your final stop would be… The Fort Hill Cemetery: Harriet Tubman’s Resting Place.
Travel Distance: 2 mns drive (12 mns walk) from Prison City Brewing
12:00 – 1:00 PM – Fort Hill Cemetery & Harriet Tubman’s Resting Place
Harriet Tubman is buried at Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York. Her gravestone, marked “Servant of God, Well Done,” honors her work in abolition, the Civil War, and her lifelong faith. The cemetery, also home to William H. Seward; offers a serene setting to reflect on Tubman’s extraordinary legacy.
