Is it possible to get a work-from-home job with no experience? The answer is Yes!
Interestingly, one of the myths that people have about working online is: you need to have work experiencer (or even a degree) to land an online job). The truth is, this isn’t. Certainly, prior work experience is helpful, but even if you don’t have it, you can still get a work from home job with no experience.
This is for you if you are:
– A recent college graduate looking for a remote job
– A new university graduate looking for a remote job online
– Looking for a remote job without having worked in the past. This is for you if you are:
Here are my top 3 tips to boost your chances of landing a work from home job with no experience!
Tip #1: Highlight the skills that you have
When reading a job application on the top websites for online jobs, most people try to mentally check the boxes on all application criteria, making sure that they meet “all the criteria” before they can put themselves out there! The truth is, you are not always going to meet all the criteria, and you should focus on the ones you meet (and not the ones that you don’t have). In general, job application requirements are guidelines, and clients do not expect you to come ticking off all the boxes. Besides, having all the requirements is not a guarantee that you will get the job anyways.
Instead of focusing on the requirements you don’t meet, focus on the skills that you have for the job, and highlight those! And if you want to level up your existing skills or acquire new ones, you can learn free remote work skills online and for free too!
Tip #2: Highlight your volunteer experience
Every skill counts, including the ones you developed when you did things for free! A lot of times. Dismissing the value of your volunteer work because you were not paid for it, is almost like dismissing the knowledge you have because you did not go to school. Think about it. Doesn’t make sense, right? If you have volunteer experience that is within your niche, you can still land a work from home job with no work experience!
If you used to write letters or essays for people at school or just for fun, highlight that. If you used to provide photography services for friends’ events and were actually good at it, highlight that! So many of our skills go under the radar because we feel like they are not “official”. But in reality, those very same skills can be the turning point for you and the one thing you market to make money online!
Tip 3: Create free samples
Free samples are critical to show your knowledge about a specific skills category if you have never worked in that category before. For those looking for an online job and who dont have prior work experience, providing free samples can help a client see what your skills are, and assess the quality of your work. I usually recommend (to all my clients) looking for online work, to have a portfolio ready for display. The portfolio can include:
- Past projects,
- Past client reviews,
- And work samples and examples.
If you are working in the article writing category for instance, and have never worked in that field (though you have the knowledge and confidence that you can do it), then create a portfolio with article samples that you wrote on topics that you love. And if you have not written anything recently, then pick a trendy topic in your niche and write about it! This can become your portfolio item.
Are you into graphic design? Well, create mock up graphics, business cards or flyer samples that you can add to your portfolio. The goal is to give the client an idea of your style, and what it would be like hiring you.
