Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro: Everything You Need to Know

Travel with Clem in front of the Christ the Redeemer statue - Things to do in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) soon? Here is everything you need to know before you go. In this guide, I will tell you when is the best time to visit, the best place to get your tickets for Christ the Redeemer in Rio, how to get there, and everything else you need to know before you go there!

Few landmarks in the world are as instantly recognizable as Christ the Redeemer. Towering above Rio de Janeiro with open arms, this iconic statue isn’t just a postcard moment. After all, it is one of the official 7 wonders of the world. I’ve been to Rio, and trust me: this is one of those attractions where planning ahead makes the difference between a great experience and a frustrating one. This guide breaks it all down so you can visit Christ the Redeemer with confidence, ease, and zero unnecessary stress.

Visiting Christ the Redeemer: How to Get There

There are three main ways to reach the statue, and which one you choose will shape your experience.

1. Train to Christ the Redeemer (The Most Popular Option)

Taking the train to Christ the Redeemer is hands-down the most iconic and organized way to visit. This is the option I chose, and I liked this because when you are on the train, you actually get to have a beautiful view of the Tijuca National Park (from the inside). The train, called the “Corcovado Train” winds its way through Tijuca National Park. The ride takes about 20 minutes and is scenic, shaded, and surprisingly relaxing.

Why the train is worth it:

  • It’s official and well-regulated
  • You avoid traffic and chaotic road access
  • Entry to the statue is included with your ticket
  • It’s the most sustainable option

If you’re planning ahead, this is the route I recommend. The second option is…

2. Official Vans (Good Backup Option)

If train tickets sell out (which happens often), authorized vans leave from:

  • Copacabana
  • Largo do Machado
  • Paineiras Visitor Center

These vans also include entry to the statue and are run by official operators. Although they are efficient, they are less scenic than the train.

3. Hiking (For Experienced Hikers Only)

Yes, you can hike to Christ the Redeemer, but this is not for beginners or solo travelers unfamiliar with Rio. I am only putting this in there to let you know that it is an option. But only pick this one if you are going with a certified guide on a tour. You can book a guided hike to Christ the Redeemer here!

Christ the Redeemer Tickets: What You Need to Know

Ticket confusion is one of the biggest pain points for visitors, so let’s clear it up. There are 3 places where you can buy your Christ the Redeemer ticket: on site when you arrive, on the official website or on tour guides websites. Let’s break down each option.

Where to buy Christ the Redeemer Tickets

Purchasing your tickets on the Christ the Redeemer tickets official website (Corcovado Train’s site) is a great option if you only want the ticket for the experience. It is direct, the money goes directly to the website and there are no third-party markups.

Purchasing on third-party websites is a good option when you want to combine this with another experience. For instance, if you want to take a hike tour to Christ the Redeemer or want to visit both Christ the Redeemer and the Sugarloaf mountain, or want to combine it with any other amazing activity to do in Rio; then I recommend using a third party website. These websites usually sell tours that are run by local tour operators, such as Etnias Turismo, and it gives you the opportunity to support locals on your trip too. For example, this Christ the Redeemer + Afrobrazilian lunch experience would be a great fit to maximize your time while there.

Important to know when booking your Christ the Redeemer tickets:

Regardless of whether you are booking with a 3rd party website or directly on the Christ the Redeemer official website, I recommend booking in advance especially if you are traveling:

  • During the peak season (December–March)
  • During Brazilian holidays
  • On the weekends

You can also get your Christ the Redeemer tickets on site, when you arrive. This is the option that I picked because when we decided to go, we were not exactly sure what time we would arrive, and it did not make sense for us to reserve a time slot (as the tickets have a “timed entry”.). This worked out for us because we got there just before the rush hour!

How much does the Christ the Redeemer Ticket Cost?

Well, the prices depend on the time of day, the season, and whether or not you are getting there with the train or a van. However, on average, expect to pay R$90–R$120 for adults. There are discounts for children and seniors. Your Christ the Redeemer ticket includes round-trip transportation to the statue, as well as entry to the monument.

Christ the Redeemer Rio Tickets: Best Time Slots

Morning slots (8–10am) and late afternoon slots (after 3pm) are the most popular. Midday often brings clouds, so you want to be mindful of that (because you don’t want to get to the top and see “nothing”).

Clem’s Pro tip: Book the earliest slot possible for clearer skies and fewer crowds. I also included more of my pro tips for visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio here!

  • Avoid midday: Heat + clouds = disappointment

What to Expect at the Top (Visiting Christ the Redeemer)

Once you arrive, expect:

  • Security checks
  • Elevators and escalators (plus some stairs)
  • Crowds: yes, always crowds (but more or less, depending on the time when you arrive).

The viewing platforms are spacious, but everyone wants that photo. Be patient, respectful, and strategic with angles. If you’re a solo traveler, don’t be shy about asking someone to take your photo: it’s completely normal here.

Is Visiting Christ the Redeemer Brazil Worth It?

Short answer? Yes. However, it is one of those places that can feel overwhelming if you arrive unprepared. But if you:

  • Book tickets in advance
  • Choose the train to Christ the Redeemer
  • Go early
  • Check the weather;

…it absolutely lives up to the hype.

Bonus Tips for a Smooth Experience when Visiting Christ the Redeemer in Rio:

  • Bring water (especially in summer)
  • Wear comfortable shoes — there are stairs to climb (but there is also an escalator)
  • Secure your phone and valuables
  • Don’t rely on buying tickets last minute
  • Respect the site — it’s both cultural and religious

Sustainable Travel Tip

Opting for the train instead of road transport helps reduce traffic and environmental impact inside Tijuca National Park. Small choices like this matter, especially at high-traffic landmarks.

Visiting Christ the Redeemer Brazil is more than just ticking off a famous landmark — it’s about experiencing Rio from its most iconic vantage point. With the right planning, it can be one of the most memorable moments of your trip.

If Rio is on your itinerary, don’t rush this experience. Do it right, do it early, and let the view speak for itself.
