European summer destinations keep changing over the years, and summer bucket list experiences are filled with countries and regions that are probably considered tourist traps. But this summer, we are doing things differently! If you are tired of fighting through crowds of tourists this summer and are ready to uncover Europe’s best destinations for a true and authentic European summer, then this article is for you. You can have the best European summer even in the most popular European cities like Paris, as long as you know where to go and what to do once you’ve knocked out your typical tourist attractions! From the enchanting streets of Paris beyond the Eiffel Tower to the coastal beauty of Deauville, the cultural haven of Lisbon, the Belgian adventure from Brussels to Antwerp, and the quaint escape of Amsterdam’s Jordaan District, I am sharing with you the most amazing and unique European summer destinations I experienced, so that you too can have an unforgettable European summer!

European Summer Destination #1:  France, but beyond the Eiffel Tower.

Who says Europe says France, and France is by definition one of the top European summer destinations. If it is your first time visiting Paris, you definitely need to knock out some of Paris top tourist attractions to make it worth your while. The Eiffel Tower, the Louvre Museum, Arc de Triomphe, Champs Elysees, and so much more. Paris: Beyond the Eiffel Tower. 

Visiting Paris during your European Summer Vacation

But as a European summer destination, while Paris may be known for its iconic Eiffel Tower, there is so much more to discover beyond this famous landmark. Just walking through the streets of Paris felt like a true vibe. Stopping at the French style Parisian cafes, window shopping at the charming boutiques, and taking in the beauty of Paris picturesque neighborhoods really made Paris a worthwhile stop during my European summer trip. 

To take your European summer in Paris up a notch, step away from the crowded tourist spots and immerse yourself in the authentic Parisian experience, from the bohemian vibes of Montmartre to the historic beauty of Le Marais. Visit the Cathedrale de Montmartre, walk up its historical (and challenging steps) and take in a view of the city like what you won’t see downtown Paris. As you wander through the city’s lesser-known gems, you’ll uncover a side of Paris that few visitors have the chance to see. 

Explore the Coastal Beauty of Deauville during your European Summer Vacation

I did not know about Deauville until my brother took me there on a daytrip during my stop in Paris. Now, it has a well-deserved stamp of approval as a “must-see: European summer destination in France. Deauville is a coastal, resort city that is just about 3 hours away from Paris (driving). Nestled along the Normandy coast, Deauville is a place where the rich and opulent go to vacation and experience a different type of “resort life”: seaside relaxation and sophisticated charm. Stroll along the iconic boardwalk, lined with colorful parasols and elegant beachfront villas, or explore the quaint streets filled with boutiques and art galleries. At the Deauville beach, there are several restaurants that serve french classics and seafood meals that you can enjoy and indulge in. You can visit Deauville on a day trip from Paris, or better yet (what I want to do next time): spend a weekend in Deauville. 

European Summer Destination #2: Portugal, but Beyond the Tourist Traps

Visit Lisbon, the Cultural Haven of the City

Lisbon is a different type of European summer destination. Rich in culture, tradition and… stairs! (the latter is something I wish I knew before visiting Lisbon! Downtown Lisbon has a lot of sections and regions that are only accessible by walking stairs, so wear flat shoes with a good grip. And this made Lisbon all the more… charming as a European summer destination. From the charming winding streets of the Alfama district to the grandeur of the Jerónimos Monastery, Lisbon is truly a cultural haven, a city that I enjoyed exploring and that I wish I had more time at.  Each neighborhood in Lisbon offers something unique, which is why I think 2-3 days in Lisbon is a good starting point if you are wondering about how long you should spend in Lisbon. Enjoy traditional Portuguese dishes  at quaint cafes and restaurants, and don’t miss the opportunity to visit the iconic Belém Tower and soak in the panoramic views of the city from São Jorge Castle. Lisbon is truly a gem in Europe, and a city that you should add on your bucket list of European summer destinations. 

Visit Albufeira, the Coastal City of Lisbon 

Located on the stunning Algarve coast, Albufeira (Portugal) was the European summer destination that blew my mind. I had never been to Portugal, and did not realize how much of an underrated destination Albufeira would be. Golden beaches, charming cobblestone streets, seafood galore and vibrant atmosphere? This is what you get from a 2-3 days stay in Albufeira. As a European summer destination, I loved that Albufeira offered a great blend of history and modernity, with a lot of opportunities to explore local sites and eat at excellent local restaurants even in highly touristic areas. I enjoyed walking through the enchanting Old Town, and soaking up the sun on the pristine beach of  Praia dos Pescadores. But this European summer destination does not just stop at picturesque views: I loved seeing how many local restaurants there were. Albufeira is the haven for foodies, especially seafood aficionados! 

European Summer Destination #3: Belgium: The Beer and Waffles Capital

Visit Brussels, the small capital city rich in personality

Brussels is called the heart of Europe because it is the headquarters of the European Union. This alone makes it an European summer destination worth the stop for this summer! Beyond this, the city is also a foodies paradise, from being the home of the Belgian waffles and the Belgian fries (which apparently are what inspired French fries). Additionally, a lot of notable European chocolatiers are from Belgium: from Godivas to Leonidas, to Neuhaus. One of the things that I loved about Brussels was this charming mix of old and new – you can wander through the historic Grand Place, where every building looks like it’s straight out of a fairy tale, and then hop on over to the Atomium, this futuristic-looking giant silver atom that is also one of the top things to see in Belgium.

European Summer Destination #4: The Netherlands, the Charming City

Visit Amsterdam, the Capital City rich in History 

Amsterdam definitely lived up to its name as a top European summer destination to explore. Where do I even start? Being in Amsterdam felt like a vibrant painting came to life. First off, the canals – they’re not just for postcards. I was pleasantly surprised to see so many canals there. But knowing the city’s history, it made sense (the city was built over a dam). Adorned with beautiful flowers all around, they make it the ideal spot for a photo opp at every corner. 

Tourists love going to Anne Frank House in Amsterdam, but I did not get the chance to do so as the museum requires advance booking. However, I enjoyed the iconic Rijksmuseum, where as an arts and culture enthusiast, I loved feeling lost in corridors of masterpieces from Van Gogh and his art acolytes. Downtown Amsterdam, you won’t get enough of the bicycles! And if you are not used to it (or rather careful), you might even lose your mind a little! (I know I almost did in my first few hours in the city). Nonetheless, I like that they are so prevalent as it makes Amsterdam not just a great European summer destination, but a sustainable city. 

Visit Jordaan, the Quaint and Appealing Historical District 

The Jordaan district is easily one of the most underrated European summer destinations in the Netherlands. Having been there, I think it is a hidden gem waiting to be discovered by those who seek a quaint escape not too far from downtown Amsterdam. As you wander through the cobblestone streets lined with cozy cafes, boutique shops, and picturesque canals, you’ll feel a sense of tranquility wash over you. I appreciated the laid-back atmosphere at the Jordaan district especially after a full day of exploring downtown Amsterdam. I also loved that it was great for leisurely strolls, and gave ample opportunities to appreciate the local culture. Another highlight of exploring the Jordaan district is admiring the unique architecture and historic buildings that dot the area. From elegant townhouses to quirky houseboats, each structure tells a story of Amsterdam’s rich history and vibrant community.
