The Best Free Things to do in Montreal during the Summer
Wander through Old Montreal
During my first trip to Montreal, Old Montreal was one of my favorite places to explore. In fact, I understood why it is one of the top places to visit in Montreal for the first time traveler. Old Montreal is a neighborhood which embodies the city’s rich history. The cobblestone streets and beautifully preserved architecture make you feel like you’re walking back in time to what Montreal used to be! Walking around Old Montreal is free, and is a great way to keep active and also travel sustainably. For an added fee, you can visit historic sites such as Notre-Dame Basilica, where tours are offered everyday (check their official website for bookings and hours). You can also explore the charming boutiques and art galleries at Old Montreal.
One of my favorites during my recent Montreal visit was simply enjoying street performers at the Place Jacques Cartier. Easily one of the best free things to do in Montreal and to enjoy during the summer.
No visit to Old Montreal could be complete without strolling around the picturesque Old Port, where you can enjoy the riverfront ambiance, take a cruise (at an added cost) or see the city’s most beautiful sights from La Grande Roue de Montréal (also an added cost).
Experience the Montreal Summer Festivals
Just like Toronto, Montreal is renowned for its lively festival scene, and summer is the perfect time to experience the city’s cultural extravaganza. Key festivals that make Montreal worth the summer stop include The Montreal International Jazz Festival, Francofolies de Montréal, and Just For Laughs Festival. In Montreal, these festivals occur at the Quartier des Spectacles. While some performances may require tickets, these festivals often feature free outdoor concerts, street performances, and interactive activities that allow everyone to partake in the festive atmosphere. I have had my fair share of free musical and cultural festivals in Toronto, and I think these would definitely be some of the best free things to do in Montreal during the summer too.
Best Free Things to do in Montreal #3: Explore Mount Royal Park
The western name of the city Montreal comes from “Mount Royal”. At the heart of Montreal lies the magnificent Mount Royal Park, which is truly a rejuvenating escape from the bustling city ambiance. If you love green spaces (like I do), you’d definitely appreciate a stop at Mount Royal Park. You can explore it by foot or bike through the trails. The latter option would require renting a bike (which would be worth it anyways). Mount Royal Park also hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the summer, including musical performances and open-air movies, making it a perfect spot for relaxation, and one of the best free things to do in Montreal.
Best Free Things to do in Montreal #4: Picnic in Parc La Fontaine
A picnic in Parc La Fontaine (or any other park in Montreal) would definitely be a great idea if you are traveling with your family, or as a couple. Parc La Fontaine, located in the heart of the Plateau Mont-Royal neighborhood, is a popular gathering spot for locals and tourists alike. This urban oasis provides lush green spaces, a picturesque lake, and plenty of shade under its majestic trees. Pack a picnic basket, grab a blanket, and unwind as you enjoy the serene ambiance, people-watch, or even catch a free outdoor theater performance. Easily one of the best things to do in Montreal with kids, if you love the outdoors.
Best Free Things to do in Montreal #5: Visit the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
During my last visit to Montreal, I was not able to explore the Museum of Fine Arts because I was short on time. Thankfully, with my Montreal Pass (Passeport Montreal), I can go back on a future visit within the year!)
While many museums charge admission fees, the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts offers free entry to its permanent collections. The museum also hosts occasional free exhibitions and cultural events, making it an ideal destination for art and culture enthusiasts, and a great addition to the best free things to do in Montreal for your first (or second visit!).
What to pack for a Montreal Travel Getaway (Summer)
Summer is warm, but some nights can be chilly too. here is what to pack for your Montreal travel experience during the summer:
- Lightweight and breathable clothing: Include items such as t-shirts, shorts, skirts, dresses, and lightweight pants. Opt for breathable fabrics like cotton or linen to stay cool. For layering options, pack a light sweater or jacket for cooler nights or air-conditioned indoor spaces. I shop at The Ngaska Store for a wide majority of my travel looks because we offer sustainable and stylish clothing (for men, women and kids).
- Comfortable walking shoes: I love walking when I travel, especially to walkable cities. Montreal is a city best explored on foot. Ensure you pack comfortable shoes for walking, such as sneakers (including hiking shoes), sandals, or flats.
- Rain gear: I no longer travel without a portable umbrella. You can get one at any pharmacy such as Shoppers Drugs Mart.
- Swimwear: Who says “summer” also says “swimwear”! If you plan to visit outdoor pools, water parks, or nearby beaches, pack swimwear. If your hotel has a pool like L’appartement Hotel where I stayed, pack swimwear. If you think you might want to relax at a jacuzzi, hot tub or Nordic Spa, also pack swimwear. Bottom line? Just pack swimwear.
- Travel essentials: Essential items such as medications/vitamins, sunscreen, a reusable water bottle, a daypack or tote bag for carrying belongings, a travel guidebook or map, electrical adapter and portable charger always make it to my suitcase and carry-on when I travel.
Montreal is a beautiful city to explore during the summer. And if you love art, culture, nature and green spaces, you would definitely enjoy visiting Montreal. A lot of the bucket list experiences and best free things to do in Montreal include nature, culture and festivals, which is a representation of what the city has to offer to visitors.
